January 1915

 

Friday, January 1st
  • Left Kingston at 1:30AM and changed at Brockville for Ottawa.  I arrived at Ottawa at 10:00AM.
  • I went to the Dominion Theatre with Cousin Cyril and had a fine time.
Saturday, January 2nd
  • I went to a hockey match-Good work done by Ottawa.
  • In the afternoon, I went to the Picture Palace (Family).
  • In the evening we had a sing-song at my Cousin’s.
Sunday, January 3rd
  • I went to the Dominion Church in the morning.
  • In the afternoon, I saw the troops at Exhibition.
  • In the evening, I had supper with my Brother and Sister-In-Law.
Monday, January 4th
  • I went to Hull, had a good walk and went to the picture show (Imperial). 
  • Bid goodbye to all and left by C.P.R. at 7:05PM.
Tuesday, January 5th
  • Arrived at Barracks in Kingston at 2:30AM.
  • We paraded morning and afternoon and went for a route march.
Wednesday, January 6th
  • Physical drill at 6:00AM
  • Paraded at 8:30AM and 2:30PM
  • Battalion drill
Thursday, January 7th
  • Physical drill at 6:00AM.
  • Vaccinated at 9:30AM.
  • Route march for 10 miles along the shores of Lake Ontario.
Friday, January 8th
  • Paraded at 6:30AM, physical drill.
  • Half battalion route march for 20 miles, at 8:30AM-very cold.
Saturday, January 9th
  • Paraded for physical drill at 6:30AM.
  • Battalion drill at 8:30AM.
  • Route march to Barriefield at 2:15 PM-skirmishing.
Sunday, January 10th
  • Paraded for church at 10:50AM.
  • Route march at 2:30PM for 10 miles along the shores of Lake Ontario.
Monday, January 11th
  • Paraded for physical drill at 6:15AM.
  • Went for Battalion drill at 8:30AM.
  • Route march at 2:30PM.
Tuesday, January 12th
  • Physical drill at 6:30AM and short march at 8:30 AM.
  • Long route march at 2:00PM to 5 miles past Barriefield.-snow up to the knees.
Wednesday, January 13th
  • Paraded at the Armouries at 8:30AM.  Battalion drill and march.
  • Paraded at 2:30PM-route march and skirmishes.
  • Hockey match on Lake Ontario-“H” Coy over “C” Coy 4 to 0.
Thursday, January 14th
  • Physical drill at 6:00AM.
  • Route march for 20 miles, leaving at 9:00AM and returning at 4:30PM
  • Battalion drill and bayonet exercises from 7:00PM to 9:30PM.
Friday, January 15th
  • Paraded for Battalion drill at 7:30AM.
  • Complimented by the Colonel.
  • Route march at 2:30PM-hard walking.
Saturday, January 16th
  • Physical drill at 6:00AM.
  • Blankets and beds aired at 8:30AM.
  • Hockey match at the rink at 1:00PM-“D” Coy won over “H”Coy 5 to 11.
Sunday, January 17th
  • Paraded for Church at 9:45AM.
  • It was an enjoyable service at the Armouries.
  • I went to church at 6:30PM at St. George’s Cathedral-beautiful service.
Monday, January 18th
  • Paraded physical drill at 6:00AM.
  • Route march at 2:30PM.
  • Bayonet drill at 3:00PM.
  • Instruction class at 6:30PM.
Tuesday, January 19th
  • Physical drill at 6:30AM.
  • Short route march at 8:30AM.
  • Received fine letters from girl and friends.
  • Inspection by Colonel.
  • Snow thawing-very dirty.
Wednesday, January 20th
  • Paraded for physical drill at 6:30AM.
  • Squad drill-existing cavalry.
  • Route march at 8:30AM.
  • Route march at 2:30PM-28 miles of rough road.
Thursday, January 21st
  • The weather is most severe.  The physical drill is as usual.
  • Route march at 8:30AM.
  • Funeral of Lieut-Colonel Wood of R.W.M.P. at 1:50PM.
Friday, January 22nd
  • Route march at 8:45AM-20 miles and beautiful scenery past Fort Henry and the Artillery Barracks.
  • Scouting and skirmishing…
  • Lieutenant F. McGee in command. (Number 4 Coy)
Saturday, January 23rd
  • Physical drill at 6:30 AM.
  • All day maneuvering –Section praised.
  • Rumours of going to England.
Sunday, January 24th
  • Church at 11:00AM-enjoyable service.
  • Parade for service at 2:30Pm at the Armouries
  • Service at St. George’s at 7:00PM
Monday, January 25th
  • Physical drill as usual.
  • Route march and outpost duty, also pickets and ambushes.
  • Issued  with new Ross Rifle
  • March in the afternoon.
Tuesday, January 26th
  • Skirmishing at 8:30AM which lasted until 10:00PM.
  • I stopped a fight between 20 men belonging to the Regiment.
  • A very enjoyable day.
Wednesday, January 27th
  • Physical drill as usual and Lecture in the Hall on pickets and outposts.
  • Concert in the evening.  Colonels Dennison and Hughes attending-very pleasant.
Thursday, January 28th
  • Route march at 8:00AM for 20 miles.
  • Went to Whiskey and Wolfe Islands and watched U.S.A. shore across Lake Ontario-distance about 50 miles.
Friday, January 29th
  • Paraded as Guard over prisoner (Sergt.) at 9:00AM; relieved by Sergt. Charles at 9:00AM on the 30th.
  • Pleasant time, very fine fellow by the name of Sergt. Berkett.
Saturday, January 30th
  • Went to Armouries at 10:00AM for equipment ready for the front.
  • Rumours flying about concerning departure.
Sunday, January 31st
  • Arose at 8:00AM-Service at St. Paul’s at 11:00AM
  • Divine Service at Armouries at 2:00pm and Church at 6:00PM with Col., & Sergt. J. Fee.
