June 1915

 

Tuesday, June 1st
  • Leave after guard.
  • Went to Hythe, Sandgate, & Folkestone
  • Had a ripping time!
Wednesday, June 2nd
  • Battalion Orderly Sergt.
  • Battalion went for a route march.
  • I was left in charge.
Thursday, June 3rd
  • On duty with Company.
  • Boys rather slack.
  • Bad reports from Front.
  • Received letter from Mother that were readdressed from Kingston.
Friday,
June 4th
  • Drill from 7:30AM to 12:00PM
  • Skirmishing amidst delightful surroundings.
  • Folkestone in the evening.
Saturday, June 5th
  • Drill ‘till noon.
  • Hythe in the afternoon-stayed all evening.
Sunday, June 6th
  • Divine Service on Square.
  • Sermon given by Captain Kidd.
  • Walked through lovely fields.
Monday, June 7th
  • Started musketry course.
  • I coached throughout the course.
  • Ranges are by the sea at Hythe.
  • Walked to Folkestone and saw a fine play.
Tuesday, June 8th
  • Musketry as usual-some fine shooting.
  • Walked along the beach at Hythe in the evening-some nice girls.
Wednesday, June 9th
  • The usual musketry.
  • Folkestone and Dover at night with Q.M.  Sergt. Fee, Sgt. Mgr. Davidson, Sergt. Jealous, Sergt. Murphy, and Sergt. Mgr. Swaine.
Thursday, June 10th
  • Musketry as usual; now finished and I am glad it is all over.
  • Have passed out myself a little above 1rst class shot.
  • Stayed in Barracks and wrote letters, later.
Friday,
June 11th
  • Drill from 7:30AM to 12:00 noon and from 1:30 PM to 5.00PM.
  • Hythe in the evening and had a pleasant time.
Saturday, June 12th
  • Drill up to 11:30AM.
  • Folkestone in the afternoon-went to the Music Hall and had a dandy time.
  • Strolled about the Promenade.
Sunday, June 13th
  • Church Service at 9:00AM.
  • Wrote letters in the afternoon and went for a walk to Hythe in the evening, returning at 10:00 PM-a lovely blow.
Monday, June 14th
  • Drill as usual.
  • Received 4 letters.
  • Stayed in camp and wrote letters.
  • Weather is dandy.
Tuesday, June 15th
  • Drill as per usual.
  • Mixture of skirmishing, musketry, observation, and bayonet fighting.
  • Went for route march through Hythe, Sandgate, and Folkestone.
Wednesday, June 16th
  • Drill as usual
  • Dover in the evening and had a fine time
  • Wrote letters until 12:00AM
Thursday, June 17th
  • Drill as usual
  • Night attack from 8:00PM
  • Folkestone with QM Sergt. J. Fee
Friday,
June 18th
  • Drill as usual
  • Left at 5:16AM for home and arrived at Charing Cross at 8:00PM.
  • Left Charing Cross and arrived home at 10:00PM.
Saturday, June 19th
  • Saw friends and went to London and saw my old Police friends.
  • Pictures in the evening
  • Quite nice to be home again.
Sunday,
June 20th
  • Walked about the country.
  • Brought girl home in the afternoon and went for a walk across the fields at Cheshunt.
Monday,
June 21st
  • Went about Cheshunt and then to London.
  • Dinner and supper at Popular.
  • Walked Piccadilly’s and Hyde Park
  • Saw plenty of friends.
Tuesday, June 22nd
  • Saw friends and went to London for the day.
  • In the evening I went to Lyseum and saw “In war time”.
  • Very fine stay.
  • Girl naturally there.
Wednesday, June 23rd
  • Went for a walk with Jack Fee, girl, and brother F. (Frank).
  • Afternoon at Guildhall and tea at Popular.
  • Left for Sandling Camp at 7:05PM.
Thursday, June 24th
  • Drill from 7:30 AM to 12 noon and from 1:30PM to 5PM.
  • Played football and baseball in the evening.
Friday,
June 25th
  • Drill as usual both in the morning and the afternoon.
  • Still in camp in the evening and wrote letters.
  • Received a letter from Henry-very little news.

Saturday,
June 26th

  • Drill of every kind-finished at 12 noon.
  • Folkestone in the evening with QM J. Fee.

Sunday,
June 27th

  • Church parade on Square
  • Stroll about the lovely fields.
  • Wrote letters.
Monday, June 28th
  • Drill as usual in the morning and the afternoon.
  • 1 hour lecture and night attacks from 8 PM to 2 AM.
  • March out and attack returning.
Tuesday, June 29th
  • Parades as usual and general manoeuvres.
  • Received letters and stayed in camp.
Wednesday, June 30th
  • Drill in the morning.
  • Muster parade
  • Battalion sports in the afternoon.
  • Wrote letters.
